Description
We are so very lucky where we live here in Ontario, We have 3 lighthouses here in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. This one is located at the mouth of the Thames River (Canadian Heritage River) where its waters enter Lake St. Clair. The Thames River was once a major shipping artery inland to London Ontario, with Chatham a shipbuilding town. Ships growing bigger and sediments accumulating making the river shallow, only recreation boating is allowed.
This is one of the 3 oldest lighthouses located on the Great Lakes. The first lighthouse was a wood frame structure, constructed in the very early 1800's by the Cartier family. In 1812 it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1818 of the present stone construction, and in 1867 (Canada's Confederation) it was extended to its present height.
